Saskatchewan, one of the world\u2019s leading producers of fertilizers and grains, has been strengthening its ties with Brazil as part of a strategy to enhance trade relations and expand opportunities for economic cooperation. This movement includes institutional engagements with Brazilian authorities and business leaders, as well as regional partnership initiatives. These efforts to bring stakeholders from both countries closer together are supported by the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One recent milestone in this rapprochement was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the government of Goi\u00e1s and the Canadian province, formalized during a recent institutional visit by Saskatchewan representatives to Brazil. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in strategic areas such as mining and rare earths, agriculture and agri-technology, education, technology, and innovation. According to Saskatchewan\u2019s Minister of Trade and Export Development, Warren Kaeding, \u201cBrazil has become a very important trading partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The understanding aims to facilitate governmental and commercial partnerships, as well as to encourage new investments between the two regions. The initiative also reflects the economic convergence between Goi\u00e1s and Saskatchewan, both of which have strong vocations in agribusiness and in activities related to mining and the processing of natural resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trade between Brazil and Saskatchewan already shows significant volumes and strong productive complementarity. In 2025, bilateral trade reached approximately CAD 1.72 billion (around BRL 6.36 billion at current exchange rates), with exports from the Canadian province to Brazil totaling about CAD 1.66 billion (BRL 6.14 billion) and Brazilian imports amounting to roughly CAD 59.3 million (approximately BRL 219.4 million). Minister highlights rising sectors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Saskatchewan\u2019s export profile to the Brazilian market, largely concentrated in agribusiness inputs, was highlighted by Minister Warren Kaeding during his visit last month to the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce Brazil-Canada in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The main product\u2014accounting for the majority of the province\u2019s sales to Brazilian businesses\u2014is potassium chloride, used in fertilizer production. \u201cIt is worth noting that Brazil is already one of our main markets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to potash, exports include agri-food products such as lentils, dry peas, wheat, and mustard seeds. Although these represent smaller volumes, they reinforce the importance of Saskatchewan\u2019s agricultural production and point to additional opportunities for integration between the two countries\u2019 agro-industrial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another segment present in the trade relationship is industrial machinery and equipment. \u201cThere are also significant opportunities in technology and equipment,\u201d Minister Kaeding noted, pointing out that products such as drilling or excavation machinery, industrial elevators, and equipment parts have appeared more frequently in the province\u2019s export portfolio in recent years, signaling potential for expanded cooperation in sectors related to mining, infrastructure, and heavy industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the opposite direction, Brazilian exports to Saskatchewan are more diversified, with emphasis on machinery and equipment used in construction, mining, and agriculture. Key items include front-end loaders, self-propelled motor graders, and bulldozers, as well as metal industrial inputs and some agro-industrial products, such as orange juice. In this context, according to the minister, Brazil \u201chas great potential in critical minerals\u201d and can rely on the province to \u201ccontribute with technology and development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n During the minister\u2019s visit to S\u00e3o Paulo, it was also emphasized that strengthening relations with Brazil is part of a broader strategy to diversify markets and expand Saskatchewan\u2019s international presence. \u201cWe want to grow together and strengthen this long-term relationship,\u201d said Kaeding, noting that, with a strong foundation in natural resources, agriculture, and mining, the province seeks to deepen partnerships with dynamic economies and large consumer markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This scenario indicates that, despite the predominance of fertilizers in the trade agenda, there is room to expand cooperation across multiple fronts\u2014including agribusiness, agricultural technology, mining, industrial equipment, and innovation\u2014reinforcing the growth potential of the economic relationship between Saskatchewan and Brazil. In this context, the minister believes there are \u201cmany synergies and value in deepening this partnership,\u201d pointing to continued progress in bilateral relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Networking opportunity in Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n An additional opportunity to strengthen this bilateral partnership arises through business missions to the province, which is a leader in fertilizer production. One such upcoming mission to Saskatchewan is the traditional Ag in Motion event. Scheduled to take place from July 18 to 24, it will offer participants direct immersion in the local agro-industrial ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During this period, Brazilian participants will be able to attend Canada\u2019s largest outdoor agricultural trade show, including technical visits to adapted facilities, as well as live demonstrations of machinery and field solutions.
