For Brazilian businesses exploring global growth, Canada offers a stable, predictable, and strategically located platform for expansion. One of the strongest emerging hubs is the Edmonton Metropolitan Region in Western Canada.

For companies considering expansion into Canada, an essential early step is connecting with the local economic development organizations that can support a smooth and informed entry into the market. Edmonton Global helps international firms evaluate opportunities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region by providing market intelligence, facilitating introductions to industry and government partners, and supporting investment decisions. For Brazilian companies, this guidance can significantly accelerate market entry and reduce risk, making Edmonton a practical and strategic launch point for North American growth.

What Is Foreign Direct Investment — and Why It Matters to Your Business?

Foreign direct investment occurs when a company expands operations into another country – by building a new facility, hiring local talent, or acquiring an existing business. These moves can help companies to access new customers, establish a footprint in strategic markets, and grow their global competitiveness and resilience.

In recent years, several global companies have chosen the Edmonton region for these reasons.

Linde (UK) is currently constructing a $2 billion hydrogen production facility), positioning itself to serve North America’s fast-growing clean energy market

Sia Partners (France) opened an Edmonton office in 2022 to tap into the region’s tech talent and strengthen its North American presence

Johnson Controls (US) acquired local tech giant Silent Aire in 2021 for $1.3 billion expanding its global advanced manufacturing and technology offerings

These decisions were about achieving corporate advantage through innovation, operational efficiency, and market access.

In Canada, more than one-third of all jobs are with multinationals. In short, FDI is one of the most effective ways for communities to grow their economies — which is why countries and regions around the world compete to attract it.

Global Trends: Where Investment is Going

Globally, FDI has more than doubled over the past 20 years, rising from USD 0.77 trillion in 2003 to over USD 1.34 trillion in 2024. The biggest shift has been in what sectors and industries those investments are being made.

In 2024, technology surpassed energy and mining as the top sector for global investment, surpassing energy and mining, reflecting the worldwide shift toward digitization and clean technology.

The Canadian Advantage

Canada consistently ranks among the most attractive destinations for foreign investment. In 2024, Canada received USD 64 billion in FDI, or about 4% of all global flows, placing it fifth worldwide (Brazil ranks third).

For investors, Canada offers some clear advantages:

Political stability and strong regulatory predictability

A highly skilled workforce

An abundance of natural resources and clean energy

A reputation for reliability and innovation

Excellent market access

In recent years, investment into Canada has diversified significantly. While the United States remains important, growing investment from Europe and Asia in 2023 and 2024 demonstrates a broader international appetite for Canadian partnerships. More recent disruptions to long standing trade policy in North America are also creating opportunities for Brazil to expand its presence.

Why the Edmonton Region is a Strategic Opportunity

Located in Western Canada, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region is a growing hub for clean energy, hydrogen, technology, logistics, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing. For companies entering North America, the region combines market access, affordable operating costs, and exceptional talent.

Between 2020 and 2024, the region captured roughly 14% of Canada’s total FDI while accounting for just 4% of the national population (Figure 3). For investors this translates into proven investor confidence.

A Missed Opportunity: Brazilian Investment into Edmonton

In the past five years, Brazil companies have invested over USD 761 million into Canada, placing them outside of the top 15 countries for inbound investment into Canada. At the same time, none of that investment landed in the Edmonton region.

This gap represents untapped potential. Brazilian firms have not yet taken advantage of what Edmonton and Western Canada can offer, leaving significant room for future investment (Figure 4).

This is especially notable because Brazilian companies are global leaders in energy, agribusiness, and advanced manufacturing—all sectors where the Edmonton region has strong, complementary strengths.

For Brazilian businesses seeking to diversify beyond Latin America, Edmonton offers a stable, high-opportunity base for accessing the broader North American market, supported by clean energy, competitive costs, and strong technical talent.

Conclusion

Choosing the right location for international expansion can determine the long-term success of a company’s global strategy. The Edmonton Metropolitan Region provides Brazilian businesses with:

Reliable, low-cost, low-carbon energy

Access to world-class talent in tech, AI, engineering, and advanced manufacturing

A stable, predictable regulatory and political environment

Strong connectivity to the US market through USMCA

An affordable and business-friendly place to establish North American operations

As global markets evolve, the Edmonton region offers Brazilian companies a practical and strategic pathway to grow, diversify, and strengthen their global presence.
