Dr. Moraes is presently head of Leprosy Laboratory of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ) in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, which host a JCI accreditated clinic, and he also has a managing position as Head of Innovation program in FIOCRUZ. As a manager Milton has been structuring a program with a large and diverse portfolio of projects funded by FIOCRUZ to accelerate innovation and solve public health issues. As a researcher he develops translational and clinical research in leprosy among other infectious diseases. A GMP qPCR-based test for leprosy diagnosis is now developed and being incorporated as a new technology for the public health system in Brazil. Several clinical trials from safety of leprosy therapeutic vaccines and chemoimmunoprophylaxis for infected people are being conducted in the clinic. He is also studying a wide range of topics from basic immunopathology of the disease to better (host-directed) treatment using novel pharmaceuticals. Also Dr. Moraes´s research interests are focused on the functional genomics and genetic epidemiology of human immune response to infectious diseases, such as leprosy and tuberculosis, but also COVID19 Zika, dengue, hepatitis and leishmaniasis. This area is aligned with novel strategies to use metagenomics to study city health using these approaches to perform genomic surveillance. Dr Moraes has been formally trained in molecular biology and immunology of leprosy and got his PhD in Brazil (FIOCRUZ) in 2000. Since then, he has been collaborating with different researchers in Brazil in internacional networks that have been in infectious diseases and metagenomics with collaborators in Swiss, Canada, France, UK, Holland, USA, India, and Mozambique. He currently works at FIOCRUZ as an associate researcher and he is a lecturer in molecular Biology at State University of Rio de Janeiro.
